Industries play an important part in development of an economy. The degree of development that takes place in any country can be determined by the extent of its industrialization. It is almost impossible for an industrial organization to keep running its various operations smoothly unless it keeps a periodic check on its machinery through some testing methods. Non Destructive Testing or NDT here proves valuable by means of which the operative condition of different types of machinery can be assert. The various NDT tests help in keeping the cost of repairs and replacements of machinery at a low level. Especially in the Nuclear or Power Generation, Automobile, Refining & Petrochemical, Pulp & Paper or Aerospace industries where the cost of repair and replacements could reach billions of dollars, these testing methods are very essential.
Non Destructive Testing (NDT) is used to find the flaws in the materials that are used in the industrial machinery. Industrial organizations all across the world make use of the NDT methods to find out the defects in the machineries and rectify them. This helps in minimizing the cost that they will have to bear if their machinery fails because of some defect in the material or component.
In order to understand how NDT helps the organizations in minimizing the repair and replacement cost, you first have to get an idea of what NDT actually is and how it works. Non Destructive Testing or NDT is basically a wide group of techniques by means of which we can evaluate the properties of a material, component or system. One of the hallmarks of this testing is that it does not cause harm to the material or object on which it is used.
There are various types of NDT methods. These include:
Eddy-current testing helps in determining the surface as well as sub surface flaws. Further, it is also used for detecting conductivity in conductive materials.
In Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method electromagnetic radiation is used to get an image of sub- surface which in turn helps in locating voids, cracks and material defects.
Liquid Penetrant Testing is used find the defects in non porous materials. In this method a Penetrant solution is applied on the surface of the component to be tested. This solution helps in locating the cracks, voids and various other defects.
Magnetic Particle Testing is conducted by creating magnetic lines of force or Magnaflux around the object to be tested. Any distortion in these magnetic lines warns us about the presence of defect.
